Abstract expressionist artwork on paper.
This work is rooted in the urban graffiti art tradition, created in collaboration with Artik Art & Architecture, to establish a placemaking public art statement for the building exterior. Taking my spray paint abstractions and having them magnified and transferred into laser-cut positive and negative spaces in steel panels. These panels were then powder coated and painted free-hand, based on an original computer sketch. Designed as one image, the work was divided into smaller sections for production and installation around the building facade.
Location: Downtown College Prep High School, San Jose, CA.
A collaborative project co-created with the residents of the Sequoia Towers Apartments. An example of Creative Placemaking as the design creation spanned an in depth series of workshops and artmaking activities with youth and residents to create and re-imagine what the facade of their complex could represent. We created a span of colors and design motifs based on indigenous themes that were a concern of the residents. A playful array of colors were then added to give the building a sense of “flight” as one resident stated. “It looks like the building has wings.”
